Snacks from the Dead: Hot from Rio Chilli Skips

Things got spicy – but not for long

Ever felt as if the God of crisps doesn’t like you? That before you know it, your favourite flavour’s disappeared from the shelves forever?

Some were right to get the chop (Beef Squares, we’re looking at you), but as the revival of Prawn Cocktail Quavers has shown, anything is possible, so perhaps these heroes of yesteryear will also make a comeback one day at a pub near you.

Ah, Hot from Rio Chilli Skips. Originally from the same era as the aforementioned Prawn Cocktail Quavers – surely reason enough to give them another crack – these zingy little numbers, and their less illustrious cousin, Chinese Spare Rib, burned brightly during the early 90s, and lasted slightly longer than Gazza‘s brief but brilliant World Cup career.

For so long now, Skips have stuck rigidly (an ironic word for this particular breed of crisp) to prawn and prawn alone, but Quavers did so with cheese flavour for many years, and the rest is history. However, with Rio Chilli being so niche, it’s unlikely we’ll see them again, and may have to grudgingly admit that they were for their time.
