Snacks from the Dead: Walkers Poppadom Crisps

Curried favour in two awesome flavours

So how are you coping with the Walkers shortage? It’s only when you look at the amount of empty space in the crisps aisle that you realise the monopoly they have on the industry; one IT glitch and it all goes wrong. Still, without computers, Snacks from the Dead would never have seen the light of day – whoever said technology was a good thing?

Still, if your clammering for Quavers, missing your Max, or shedding tears for Snaps, spare a thought for fans of the subject of this month’s eulogy. In a couple of weeks time you’ll be back happily munching away on your favourites, but for Poppadom Crisps they’ll remain only in our hearts.

Can any crisp honestly claim that it introduced a generation of kids to Indian food? With their authentic look and texture, combined with a mildly spicy taste, Walkers Poppadom Crisps were truly unique. Not only that, but they were so confident in themselves that just the two flavours – Bombay Spicy and Kashmir Mild – were all that was needed to make a mark.

And so it remained until their early-90s demise. Even if they had survived a bit longer, surely political correctness would’ve been their undoing: Bombay is now known as Mumbai; Kashmir is unfortunately a war zone. Outdated, un-PC, and to top it all Walkers have been producing the popular (but vastly inferior) Sensations for a few years now. Of all the entries in Snacks from the Dead, this is possibly the most unlikely phoenix from the flames.
