Three different flavours, one great price
Crisp connoisseurs with a nose for news may have noticed last year that Fortnum & Mason, that esteemed bar snack merchant, released their own brand of crisps, coming in at a cool £25 per packet. On The Jeremy Vine Show, no less, they were put to a taste-test and were apparently quite the hit.
But for those of us who don’t live in Kensington, that’s a little too much. Hell, it puts the £5.99 that yours truly paid in Soho, only a few weeks ago, well into the shade. Although having said that…. £2-plus for a tube of Pringles (and certainly not the long-forgotten flavour that was once commemorated here)? The cheek of it Sainsburys/Morrisons/Asda!

So what was the great price mentioned in the sub-heading? Are you ready for this? Are you sure? Are you really, really sure? How does 5p grab you? Yes, you read that right; five of your earth pence, if you please. The three flavours also in question? Cheese, Pickled Onion and – this is one of the best flavours ever, it has to be said – Hamburger.
It’s thought that the Bumpkin went the way of many of its kith and kin of that era. We’re talking Quarterbacks, Tangy Toms, Meanies – all of whom could’ve been wonderful inclusions for this very feature, I might add – but the like of which are now confined to cash & carries if they’re lucky. Bumpkins never swayed from their high-value pricetag though, and is there room for that in the image-obsessed 21st-century? Sadly not.
