We’re closing our doors, but let’s just call it a refurb

Ciao, veeslat, toodle-pip – whichever language you choose, goodbyes are never easy. After just over three years and 77 articles, we decided it was time to… well, call time. But fear not, this is just a temporary arrangement and we’ll be back sometime in 2025.
Starting out as the “saviour of sport and the hospitality industry” was a bold, some might say big-headed claim. We hope, however, that it helped out in its own little way, no matter how insignificant. What we certainly can shout about is the depth of subjects broached over the course of the last 36 months or so.
We’ve covered everything from continental destinations to sorely-missed crisps; Olympic heroes to backstreet snooker halls. And you know what? They’re all as special as one another, which is why putting together a feature – whether it’s been a glowing restaurant review or a damning verdict on the beautiful game – has always been a pleasure and never a chore.
We’ve met some interesting folks, sampled world-class cuisine and fallen in love with beautiful locations along the way, and who knows where The Early Whistle will find itself in the future? We kicked off with our irresistible little monthly feature, Snacks from the Dead, and have brought things to a halt with a piece about Gareth Southgate‘s tenure as England manager.
Predictably, Hot from Rio Chilli Skips have yet to reappear in a shop near you, despite our best efforts, and we also wonder where the English national team will be in the years to come. We hope, much like this website, it’ll be in a new(ish) direction.
